Girls Basketball

Penfield (65) vs Webster Schroeder (48)

Sophomore Margot Hetzke scored 16 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and finished with 14 rebounds for the Partiots (12-0, 8-0).  Penfield went on an 8-0 run in the final three minutes of the third quarter to overcome a 42-35 deficit and take a one-point lead into the fourth.  Lucy Covley and Michelle Nesselbush each scored 16 points.  Covley added five assists.

Jeff Doser won the 100 freestyle (52.14) and was on the winning 200 medley (1:45.94) and 200 freestyle (1:37.93) relays.

200 freestyle: Jason Gorman (P) 2:00.59.

Sam Aebli scored twice, including his first varsity goal, and Connor Russell added one goal and an assist for the Patriots (5-6-2-1).  Brian Wall scored with 52 seconds left in regulation to tie the game for Penfield.

Connor Russell goal gives Penfield big win

Connor Russell scored a short-handed goal 1:47 into the second period off a feed from Jake Forken to lead Penfield past Greece Athena/Odyssey 1-0 in Section V hockey Wednesday. Forken fed the puck up the ice to Russell, who made a move on the Thunder defender and connected a wrist shot top shelf, for the Patriots (5-6-1).  Jimmy Krystofik stopped 25 shots for Penfield.

Penfield (69) at Rush Henrietta (57)

Kyle Covley made 16 of 17 free throws and scored 31 points to push Penfield to a 69-57 win over Rush-Henrietta in Monroe County boys basketball.  Covley finished with 14 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 blocks for the Patriots (5-2).

Aaron Hawn added five blocks for Penfield.  R-H (2-5) tied the score at 53 before the Patriots closed the game on a 16-4 run.

Michelle Nesselbush had 16 points and Megan Malloy added 15 points and seven assists for Penfield (9-0), which had 19 assists on 29 field goals.


Boys Hockey

Penfield (4) vs Corcoran (3)
Connor Russell scored the winner 1:17 into the third period off a wrap around shot to lead Penfield (4-5-1-1) who trailed 2-0 in the first period.  Russell finished with two goals and one assist Alex D'Agostino added a power play goal for the Patriots.

Penfield had no trouble with a weak Olympia team winning by 27 points to improve to 4-2.  Olympia is 2-7.

Margot Hetzke had 12 points and nine rebounds and Megan Malloy tallied five steals for the Patriots.  Sheila and Michelle Nesselbush combined to score nine points during a 16-2 run in the final 4:32 of the second quarter for Penfield (8-0).

Amsterdam Showcase Final

Penfield (75) vs Shaker (51)
Margot Hetzke finished with 23 points and 15 rebounds for Penfield.  The Patriots used a 16-3 run over 3:50 to build a lead to 69-50. Katie Kayes scored six of her 10 points and Sheila Nesselbush added eight of her 14 during the decisive fourth-quarter run.  Megan Malloy had 10 assists for Penfield.  Penfield is ranked No. 7 in the state in Class AA.

Penfield (58) vs St. Laurent - Montreal  (48)

Margot Hetzke scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second and third quarters and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Penfield.  St. Laurent, ranked No. 1 in the Quebec province, cut a 23-point Penfield lead to six with 3:30 remaining in the game.  Sheila Nesselbush added 13 points for the Patriots, who play Shaker-II, ranked No. 4 in the New York State Sports Writers girls basketball poll, in the championship game at 6 tonight.

Penfield (52) vs Canandaigua (47)
Kyle Covley had 11 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 4 blocks for Penfield.  Penfield was up by as many as 15 in the 4th quarter.  Canandaigua came back to within 3 with less than a minute to play but Penfield held on for the win.  Penfield is 2-2.  Penfield will play Wayne at 7:45 Thursday in the championship game.

Webster Thomas comes back to win

Patrick Schuber and Devin Jeffords combined for 17 points in the fourth quarter as Webster Thomas rallied from 15 down for a 74-67 win over Penfield Wednesday in a Monroe County boys game.  The pair scored 17 of Thomas' of the 29 fourth-quarter points.  Jeffords finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and Schuber had 12 points for the Titans (4-1).  Kyle Covley had 19 points for Penfield (1-2).

Justin Rehm scored two goals and had one assist and Ryan Caron and Jake Sproule each added a goal for Penfiled (3-4-1-1).  Jimmy Krystofik made 26 saves for his first shut out of the year for the Patriots.

Girls Basketball

Penfield (70) vs Webster Thomas (33)

Michelle Nesselbush finished with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 8 steals to lead Penfield to a 70-33 win over Webster Thomas Tuesday in a Monroe County girls game.   Margot Hetzke scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Penfield (5-0).  Megan Malloy added 13 points and seven assists for the Patriots, who put the game away with an 18-4 run in the second quarter.

Brian Wall's OT goal lifts Penfield hockey to victory

Brian Wall scored his second goal of the game 2:33 into overtime to lift Penfield to a 3-2 win over Canandaigua Thursday in Section V hockey at Webster Ice Arena.  Ryan Burke and Alex D'Agostino assisted to give Penfield (2-3-1-1) the win.  Canandaigua led 2-0 going into the third before Penfield tied it with Wall's goal with 48 seconds remaining. D'Agostino also assisted on the tying goal.

Margot Hetzke paced Penfield with 25 points and 10 rebounds, while junior guard Sheila Nesselbush had 15 points, 5 assists and 6 steals for the Patriots (3-0, 1-0). Penfield closed the third quarter with an 11-0 run. Schroeder is 0-2, 0-2. Penfield plays at Canandaigua on Friday, and then home against Webster Thomas on Tuesday.

Senior Jesse Caulkins netted the winner off a pass from freshman Joe Schuler during a 2-on-1 breakaway with 1:57 remaining in overtime to propel Webster Schroeder past Penfield 5-4 in Section V hockey Tuesday.  Brian Marron, Brien Caron, Justin Rehm and Jacob Sproule each had one goal apiece and Alex D'Agostino had two assists for the Patriots (1-2).

Penfield (64) Hamburg (38)

Penfield beat Hamburg, from Section 6, 64-38, in the Lady Patriots season opener on Saturday afternoon at PHS.  Junior Michelle Nesselbush and sophomore Lucy Covley led Penfield with 12 points each. Sophomore Margot Hetzke scored 10 points and had six rebounds.  Megan Malloy and Shannon Nesselbush had eight points each.  Sheila Nesselbush had six points. Margaret Fitzpatrick scoed five and Kasey Keileher added three. Senior Hayley Robertson, and juniors Alicia Flanagan and Katie Kayes added two points apiece.

Penfield 73  Churchville Chili 45

Penfiueld downed Churchville Chili 73-45 in the season opener for both teams. Andre Lee had 15 points,  Mitch Cote had 14 and Lorenzo Stallworth added 11.  Trent Berardi finished with eight points as Kyle Covley and Aaron Hawn added seven each for Penfield. Dan Lynd dished off seven assists for the Patriots, and Covley led the team with six rebounds.

Congratulations to Penfield Athletic Director Pete Shambo!!

Penfield's Shambo gets national honor
Penfield High School athletic director Peter Shambo was recently recognized as a Certified Master Athletic Administrator by the The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA).

The voluntary certification process included a thorough evaluation of Shambo's educational background, experience, NIAAA Leadership Courses and professional contributions.

The NIAAA is a national professional organization consisting of all 50 state athletic administrator associations and more than 8,000 individual members.
